Pfizer New Zealand supports Christchurch earthquake relief effort with a $250,000 donation

 Monday, 14 March 2011

Within 24 hours of the devastating earthquake in Christchurch, Pfizer New Zealand had committed to making a $250,000 company donation to assist the community deal with the aftermath of such a tragic natural disaster.

Pfizer employees in both New Zealand and Australia are also continuing to personally fundraise and their efforts are being matched dollar for dollar by the company.  To date donations from staff stand at $13,000 and growing ($26,000 including company matching).

All money raised will be donated to the New Zealand Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Appeal.

“Although the immediate destruction caused by the earthquake has passed, the recovery for the city and its people will be ongoing, and we will to continue to assist in any way possible,” said Frances Benge, Managing Director for Pfizer New Zealand.

“It will take time for the usual health systems in Christchurch to get to back to normal and we will do all that we can to help people get the medicines they need.  We are working with our wholesalers to make distribution as easy as possible,” added Benge.

Pfizer remains on standby to respond to any urgent requests for medicines made by the Government.

Pfizer, a pharmaceutical company that makes medicines and nutrition products for both humans and animals, assisted with the immediate relief effort by sending close to 6,000 tins of infant formula to crisis centres and a large supply of antiseptic wipes to help the Red Cross with minor first aid.

Pfizer, a member of Medicines New Zealand, which represents the pharmaceutical industry, will be a part of the Business New Zealand’s CEO forum, where 50 CEO’s will be forming a steering group to coordinate private sector support for Christchurch to help the city rebuild.
